Jazz
For students age 5 and over (by Sept. 1).
Contemporary jazz style is taught throughout the program, At appropriate times other jazz styles are introduced such as lyrical, afro-primitive, blues, musical theatre, hip hop, modern and interpretive. Examinations available.
 
Junior ~ 35 weeks
45 minutes classes per week

JAZZ CLASSES OUTLINE

INTRODUCTION TO TAP AND JAZZ - 5 years of age by December 31st.  45 minute class per week for 30 lessons.

BEGINNER Age 6-7 Complete Junior 1
8-10 Complete Junior I plus material added for mature students 
11-12 Complete Junior 1 and Junior 2 
Teen/Adult- Complete Junior 1, Junior 2, Junior 3 plus material added for mature students


JUNIOR LEVELS - Requirements for Junior

(Junior 1/ Junior 2/ Junior 3)

Approximately 3 years to complete- Work escalates over the three years in general class form.

1. Satisfactory toning and flexibility 
2. Good technical 900 kick front-side 
3. Development of co-ordination skills 
4. Basic body isolations 
5. Ability to move with moderate skills 
6. Satisfactory musical ability 
7. Single and progressive turn of a good technical level 
8. Good ball on in jumps - sissonne in arabesque and attitude of satisfactory quality 
9. Fully stretched foot whenever required 
10. Ability to pick up a new combination within 1 or 2 lessons 
11. Good retention of materials week to week 
12. Clearly defined linear arm lines 
13. Satisfactory jazz styling show in execution of all jazz work 
14. Consistent work habits/good attendance

ELEMENTARY LEVELS - Requirements for Elementary
(Elementary 4/ Elementary 5/ Elementary 6)

Approximately 3 years to complete- Work escalates over the three years in general class form.

1. Good body toning/good flexibility 
2. Good technical kick 120° front and side
3. Very competent level of co-ordination 
4. Elaborate body isolations in layered patterns 
5. Very good since of movement and stretch to work 
6. Good control on difficult movements 
7. Diversity of energy levels for varied aspects of jazz style 
8. Basic regard and ability in lyrical style 
9. Arm work that shows care 
10. Double turn, combined progressive turns of a good technical level 
11. Strong elevation - calypso/stag/full split jump 
12. Good foot dexterity - flexibility and strength
13. No hamstring problems 
14. Well defined percussive sense 
15. Good musical sensitivity
16. Ability to pick up new material at 1st lesson
17. Full retention of material week to week 
18. Clear jazz styling and presentation suited to taste and style of each step, eg., Rock, Disco, Soul (Blues), Afro-primitive, Percussive, Lyrical, Stage/Contemporary, Robotics
19. Good work habits/good attendance

INTERMEDIATE LEVELS - Requirements for Intermediate
(Intermediate 7/ Intermediate 8/ Intermediate 9)

Approximate 3 years to complete. Work escalates over the three years in general class form

1. Very good body toning/very good flexibility 
2. Good technical kick to 140° front side
3. Progressive isolations 
4. Increased strength level in balance and holding raised position 
5. Above average stamina and endurance 
6. Good styling in connective elements 
7. Multiple turn ability 
8. High elevations 
9. Increased range in lyrical style 
10. Accuracy in all arm and foot patterns 
11. Quick learning response 
12. More focus on "big jumps" and progressive tours 
13. Excellent memorization 
14. Ability to improvise 
15. Moves in all styles with ease

SENIOR LEVEL - Requirements for Senior
(Senior 10/ Senior 11/ Senior 12)

Approximately 3 years to complete. Work escalates over the three years in general class form

3. Advanced jazz technical skills 
4. Total control and musical sense 
5. Good multiple jumps 
6. Strong balletic or ballet-jazz technique 
7. Confident jumps and turns 
8. Fast study 
9. Fully prepared on material for next class 
10. Excellent interpretation in any jazz styling 
11. Good improvisational ability 
12. Exploration of many styles, moods and trends of jazz style 
13. Excellent lyrical sense 
14. Some choreographic sense 
15. Excellent work habits/near perfect attendance

JAZZ TECHNIQUES PROGRAM

A second jazz class in the technique format for those who wish to upgrade their skills and advance more quickly in some areas.  The focus of the class will emphasize more technical accuracy, greater intensive body toning and the application of ballet and modern dance movement, in the jazz idiom. Only the motivated jazz student should apply as the program corresponds with our existing technique ballet classes in approach.

Elementary Levels (Elem 4, Elem 5, Elem 6) Pre-requisite - Must be Elementary Level Jazz
Intermediate Levels (Inter 7, Inter 8, Inter 9) Pre-requisite - Must be Intermediate Level Jazz
Senior Levels (Senior 10, Senior 11, Senior 12) Pre-requisite - Must be Senior Level Jazz
